About Tripura Sundari Temple
The Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as Matabari, stands on a small hill at Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala. It was built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the most sacred sites of the goddess. The state of Tripura is believed to take its name from the goddess worshipped here.
The temple has a red-and-white curved roof in the Bengali style, and its base is said to be shaped like a tortoise. Next to it lies Kalyan Sagar, a sacred lake full of fish and turtles, which devotees feed with puffed rice and biscuits. The temple is busiest during Diwali, when a large fair is held here.
