Local tips

Plan for a long day or an overnight stay, as the drive from Agartala takes 4–5 hours each way.

Consider taking a train to Dharmanagar and driving the last 30–40 minutes.

Wear shoes with a good grip, as the steps and rocks can be wet and slippery.

Visit between November and February for dry paths and cooler weather.

Carry water and snacks, as there are few food options at the site.

Give yourself time to walk down to the lower carvings, not just the main Shiva head.

Respect the site, as pilgrims still come here to worship.

About Unakoti

Unakoti is an ancient Shaivite pilgrimage site in the forested hills of north Tripura, about 8 km from Kailashahar and around 178 km from Agartala. Its huge rock-cut carvings and stone images are generally dated to between the 7th and 9th centuries. The best known is Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava, a head of Shiva about 30 feet high, including its carved headdress.

The carvings are spread across a hillside of streams, steps and forest, so a visit involves plenty of climbing. Unakoti is on UNESCO's tentative list for World Heritage status. It is busiest during the Ashokashtami fair, usually around March or April, when pilgrims come to bathe in the pools at the site.
