Best time to visit Alleppey (Alappuzha)
The best time to visit Alleppey is from November to February, when the rain has eased, the days are warm rather than sticky and the backwaters are calm for houseboat cruises.
The monsoon, roughly June to September, turns the paddy fields and palms a deep green and is the quietest time for crowds, but heavy rain can disrupt boat trips and low-lying areas can flood. August brings the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the one reason many people come in the rains.

November to February
This is the main season. Skies are mostly clear, humidity is lower and the water is calm, which makes it the easiest time for houseboats, shikara trips and beach sunsets. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, especially around Christmas and New Year.
March to May
Heat and humidity build up, and the middle of the day can be tiring. Early mornings and late afternoons on the water are still pleasant, and crowds are thinner. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms are common in May.
June to September
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain, especially in June and July. The backwaters are green and quiet, and houseboat stays are more relaxed, but some trips can be cut short in bad weather and the sea is rough. Kuttanad and other low-lying areas can flood, so watch weather alerts. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is usually held in August.
October
The monsoon eases, although afternoon showers are still common. It is a good shoulder month, with green scenery and fewer visitors before the main season begins.
When Is Alleppey Most Crowded?
Alleppey is busiest from late December to early January, over long weekends, during Onam (usually August or September) and on the weekend of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Houseboats book up well ahead at these times.
For a calmer trip, visit in November, February or October, and take boat trips early in the day.
