About the Alleppey Backwaters
The Alleppey backwaters are a network of canals, rivers and lagoons that link the town with Vembanad Lake and the farming villages of Kuttanad. Life still happens on the water here: children row to school, ducks are herded along the banks and small ferries stop at village jetties. Much of Kuttanad's rice is grown on land reclaimed from the water, lying one to two metres below sea level and protected by earth banks.
Most visitors explore on a houseboat, a converted rice barge with bedrooms and a crew, which cruises the wider waterways for a day or overnight. A shikara, a smaller canopied boat hired by the hour, can turn into narrow canals where the big boats cannot go. Many trips start from the Finishing Point on Punnamada Lake.
