About Punnamada Lake

Punnamada Lake is a wide stretch of backwater on the edge of Alleppey, part of the larger Vembanad Lake system. It is best known as the course of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, when long snake boats with crews of more than a hundred rowers race towards the finish line in front of packed stands.

For the rest of the year Punnamada is one of the busiest starting points for backwater trips. The Finishing Point area has jetties where many houseboats and shikaras set off, and from the water you get open views across the lake, dotted with fishing canoes and passing boats.
