About Vembanad Lake
Vembanad is the largest lake in Kerala, stretching from Alleppey north towards Kochi. It is a wide brackish lake fed by several rivers, with low green banks, paddy polders and fishing villages around its edges, and it is protected as a Ramsar wetland of international importance.
From Alleppey you can cross the lake by boat to see its open water, fishermen with their nets and the small bird island of Pathiramanal. The Kumarakom side, on the far shore, is known for its bird sanctuary, and the lake is at its most peaceful at sunrise, before the boat traffic builds.
