About the Badami Cave Temples

The Badami Cave Temples are four temples cut straight into the red sandstone cliff on the southern side of Agastya Lake, in the late 6th century under the early Chalukya kings. You climb from one cave to the next up a series of stone steps, and each has a pillared hall and a small shrine carved out of the rock.

Caves 1 to 3 are Hindu. Cave 1 is known for its 18-armed dancing Shiva (Nataraja), while Cave 3, the largest, has large carvings of Vishnu, including Vishnu seated on the serpent and Vishnu as Trivikrama. Cave 4 is Jain, with carved figures of Jain Tirthankaras. From the cave terraces you look down over the lake to the Bhutanatha temples and the fort hill opposite.
