About Pattadakal

Pattadakal is a group of 7th- and 8th-century Chalukya temples on the bank of the Malaprabha river, about 22 km from Badami. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for showing both the northern (Nagara) and southern (Dravida) styles of temple building side by side in one complex.

The largest temple is the Virupaksha Temple, built in the 8th century by Queen Lokamahadevi to mark her husband's victory. Its walls are covered with carved scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The site was also where the Chalukya kings were crowned. Pattadakal is usually visited on the same day as Aihole, which is a little further along the same road.
