Best time to visit Bandhavgarh
The best time to visit Bandhavgarh is from October to June, when the core zones of the tiger reserve are open for safaris. October to February is cool and comfortable, with cold mornings, while April to June is very hot but often gives the best tiger sightings.
The core zones close from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon, though the buffer zones stay open all year. The right month for you depends on whether you want comfortable weather, the best chance of a sighting or quieter drives.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cool and dry from November to February, warmer in October and March — the most comfortable safari months, with cold dawns in December and January.
Pack: warm layers, a jacket, cap and gloves for dawn safaris in open jeeps, which are far colder than the afternoon.
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
Very hot, often 40 °C+ by midday, but often the best months for sightings — the forest thins out and animals come to the waterholes. Safaris run early and late.
Pack: light full-sleeve cottons in muted colours, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Park closed in monsoon — the one season to skip, as only a few buffer zones, if any, keep running safaris and the forest tracks turn to mud.
Pack: a rain shell and shoes that can take mud, if you come for the buffer zones.
Best Month to Visit Bandhavgarh
October and November
The core zones reopen on 1 October after the monsoon. The forest is green and the weather is pleasant, but the grass is still tall, so animals can be harder to spot. The Diwali holidays bring a rush of visitors, and the park is closed for safaris on Diwali itself.
December to February
These are the coolest months. Days are sunny and mild, but early mornings can drop close to freezing, and the open jeeps feel colder still. Mist often hangs over the meadows at dawn. This is also peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year.
March
The forest starts to dry out and afternoons reach the mid-30s °C. It is a good balance of comfortable weather and improving sightings. The park is closed for safaris on Holi, which usually falls in March.
April to June
The hottest months, with temperatures often around or above 40 °C. The leaves thin out and animals stay close to the waterholes, so sightings are often at their best. Morning drives are the most comfortable, and pre-monsoon showers can arrive in late June.
July to September
The monsoon brings most of the year's rain, and the core zones are closed. The buffer zones stay open for safaris, with green forest and fewer visitors, but tracks can be muddy and drives can be cancelled after heavy rain.
When Is Bandhavgarh Most Crowded?
Bandhavgarh is busiest around Diwali, Christmas and New Year, and during the May and June school holidays. Tala zone permits for these weeks often sell out months ahead, and lodges fill up early.
For quieter drives, avoid the holiday weeks and book weekdays where you can. There are no afternoon safaris on Wednesdays. See what to wear in Bandhavgarh for each season.
