About the Bandhavgarh Caves
The sandstone cliffs around Bandhavgarh's fort hill are dotted with man-made caves, around 39 of them by the usual count. Many were cut as shelters for Buddhist monks, and some carry inscriptions in the ancient Brahmi script. A 2022 survey by the Archaeological Survey of India recorded 26 Buddhist caves and 24 Brahmi inscriptions from about the 2nd to the 5th centuries, naming kings who ruled the area at the time.
Today the caves are part of the tiger reserve, and tigers, leopards and bats sometimes shelter inside. You see them from the jeep on Tala zone safaris, where guides point out cave mouths in the cliffs, including Badi Gufa, the largest, with its pillars and several rooms. Some caves also have carved figures of tigers, elephants and horsemen.
