About Bandhavgarh Fort

Bandhavgarh Fort sits on the flat top of the hill at the centre of the reserve, above cliffs that drop into the Tala zone. Legend says Rama gave the fort to his brother Lakshmana to keep watch over Lanka, which is how it got its name: bandhav means brother and garh means fort. Inscriptions show that kings ruled here from around the 2nd century, and the fort was later held by the Kalachuris and then the Baghels, who moved their capital to Rewa in 1617.

The hilltop holds the ruins of old royal buildings, ponds and wells, the Ram-Janaki temple, Kabir's cave and large carved figures of Vishnu's avatars. The fort is closed to tourists to protect wildlife and opens to devotees only on a few festival days, such as Krishna Janmashtami and the Kabir Mela. On a normal visit, you see its cliffs from the Tala zone safari tracks.
