Best time to visit Bekal

The best time to visit Bekal is from October to March, when the weather is dry and warm and the sea is calmer. This is also theyyam season in north Malabar and the time for the Bekal International Beach Festival in late December.

April and May are hot and humid, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and rough seas. The monsoon suits travellers who want green scenery and quiet roads, but not those planning beach days.

Best Month to Visit Bekal

October and November

The rains ease off, the countryside is still green, and the theyyam season begins in late October or early November. A good time for the fort and backwaters, with fewer visitors than December.

December to February

The driest and most comfortable months, with sunny days and pleasant evenings. This is the peak season, and the Bekal International Beach Festival is usually held in the last ten days of December.

March to May

The heat and humidity build, especially in April and May. Sightseeing is best early and late in the day. Theyyam festivals continue, and the big ones at Madiyan Koolom and Mannampurathu Kavu usually fall in May.

June to September

The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas. Swimming is unsafe, some boat trips may stop and the fort walls can be slippery. The coast is at its greenest, though, and prices are lower. Onam falls in August or September.

When Is Bekal Most Crowded?

Bekal is busiest from late December to early January, during the beach festival and the Christmas and New Year holidays. Weekends bring day-trippers from Kasaragod, Kanhangad and Mangaluru to the fort and beach.

For a quieter trip, visit on a weekday in November, February or March, and reach the fort soon after it opens.
