About Gol Gumbaz
Gol Gumbaz is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah, completed in 1656, and the best-known building in Bijapur. Its dome, about 44 m across on the inside, is one of the largest in the world, and it is held up without any pillars. Four seven-storey octagonal towers stand at the corners of the huge square hall.
The main draw is the whispering gallery, a narrow walkway around the base of the dome. A whisper against the wall can be heard clearly on the far side, and a clap echoes several times. To reach it, you climb narrow stairs inside one of the corner towers. The complex also includes a mosque and an archaeological museum in the old gateway building.
