About the Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid of Bijapur was begun by Ali Adil Shah I in 1576 and is the largest mosque in the city. It has a wide courtyard, a long prayer hall of arches and a large central dome. Inside, the mihrab is decorated in gold and black with Persian verses.

The mosque is still used for daily prayers, so it is a place of worship first and a monument second. Visitors of all faiths can usually come in outside prayer times. Dress modestly, remove your shoes and keep quiet inside. The rows of arches in the prayer hall are one of the most photographed interiors in Bijapur.
