Best time to visit Chennai

The best time to visit Chennai is from January to March, when the rains are over and the days are warm and dry. December is also popular, thanks to the Margazhi music season, but it can still bring heavy rain.

Chennai is different from most of India because its main rainy season is the northeast monsoon, from October to December. The southwest monsoon that soaks Kerala and Mumbai brings only occasional showers here. April to June is the hottest time of year, so the right season for you depends on how you handle heat and rain.

Best Month to Visit Chennai

January to March

The best months for sightseeing. The rains have cleared, the humidity is lower and mornings at Marina Beach are pleasant. January brings Pongal, Tamil Nadu's harvest festival, and the end of the music season.

April to June

The hottest months of the year, with May usually the peak. Days are very hot and humid, so plan sightseeing for early morning and evening, and rest indoors in the middle of the day.

July to September

Still hot, but with occasional evening thunderstorms that can cool the air for a while. The southwest monsoon largely misses Chennai, so this is not the main rainy season here.

October to December

The northeast monsoon brings Chennai most of its rain, with November usually the wettest month. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal can cause flooding and disrupt travel, so watch the forecast. December is drier and busy with the Margazhi music season.

When Is Chennai Most Crowded?

Chennai is busiest from mid-December to mid-January, during the music season and Pongal, when hotels and trains fill quickly. Long weekends, Diwali and the Kapaleeshwarar Temple's Panguni festival in March–April also bring big crowds to the city and to Mylapore.

For a quieter trip, visit in February or March, and plan beach and temple visits early in the day.
