About Fort St. George
Fort St. George was built by the English East India Company in the 1640s, and the city of Madras grew up around it. It was the first English fort in India, and it still stands near the northern end of the Marina seafront. Today it is also the seat of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and Secretariat, so parts of the fort are working government offices.
The two main sights for visitors are the Fort Museum, with weapons, coins, uniforms and portraits from the colonial period, and St Mary's Church. Completed in 1680, St Mary's is the oldest Anglican church east of Suez, and its walls are lined with old memorials. The whitewashed buildings, arches and old walls give the fort a quiet, historic feel away from the traffic outside.
