About Kapaleeshwarar Temple

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore is one of Chennai's best-known temples. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kapaleeshwarar and his consort Karpagambal, who is shown in temple stories as a peacock, which gives Mylapore its name. The temple is known for its tall gopuram, covered from base to top in brightly painted sculptures of gods and figures from Hindu stories.

Beside the temple is a large tank with steps on all sides, which is the heart of the neighbourhood. The streets around it are lined with flower sellers, brass shops and small eateries. The temple is busiest during the Panguni festival in March–April, when chariot and saint processions fill the streets of Mylapore.
