About Baba Budangiri
Baba Budangiri is a range of hills north of Chikmagalur, named after the 17th-century Sufi saint Baba Budan. According to legend, he brought seven coffee beans back from Yemen and planted them on these slopes, which is why the area is called the birthplace of coffee in India.
The hills are home to a cave shrine known as the Inam Dattatreya Peetha, linked to both Lord Dattatreya and Baba Budan and visited by Hindus and Muslims. The road up passes open grassy ridges and shola forest, with wide views over the Malnad hills. Since September 2025, private vehicles have needed a pass booked online in advance.
