About Madikeri Fort
Madikeri Fort stands on a hill in the centre of Madikeri. A mud fort was first built here in the 17th century by a Kodagu king, and it was later rebuilt in stone. Inside are the old palace of the Kodagu rulers, built in the early 19th century, two life-size stone elephants near the gate, and an old church that now houses a small museum.
The fort is still in use, as it holds government offices, so parts of it are busy on weekdays. It is free to enter and easy to see in an hour, and the ramparts give you views over the town. The museum usually closes on Mondays.
