Local tips
Go early in the day, as clouds often cover the mountains by afternoon.
Do not take photos of the Air Force station or its road, and follow any signs.
Wear trainers or hiking shoes, as the walk up is steep and uneven.
Carry a warm layer, as the summit is windy even in summer.
Take water and a snack, as there is little to buy on the way up.
Keep to the marked path and do not enter fenced areas.
Avoid the walk in heavy rain or fresh snow, when the path turns slippery.
About Dainkund Peak
Dainkund Peak is the highest point around Dalhousie, at roughly 2,750 m, and lies about 10–12 km from the town. Its open, grassy top gives some of the widest views in the area, across the valleys to the Pir Panjal range. Locals call it the singing hill, because of the sound the wind makes through the grass and trees.
The small Pholani Devi temple stands on the summit, and the last stretch is an uphill walk from the road. An Indian Air Force station sits nearby, so parts of the hill are closed to visitors and photography is not allowed around the base. Come on a clear morning for the best chance of seeing the snow peaks.
