Best time to visit Dawki
At Dawki the right month matters more than anything else you plan. In the dry season the Umngot is clear to the riverbed; in the monsoon it is brown, fast and often closed to boats.

Plan a monsoon day →November to February: clearest water
These are the months in the famous photos. The river is low, slow and clear, the skies are mostly dry, and days in Dawki are mild and sunny. It is also peak season. Weekends, Christmas and New Year bring long queues for boats and heavy traffic on the single-lane bridge. Come on a weekday if you can, and start early from Shillong. The drive over the hills is cold in the morning even though Dawki is warm.
March and April: still good, getting warmer
The water usually stays clear, the crowds thin out and the days get hot and humid. Storms start to build in April. A heavy downpour can cloud the river for a day or two, so keep your plan flexible.
May: the change-over
Pre-monsoon rain gets heavier and more frequent. You may get clear days, but you may also find the river already rising. It is a gamble.
June to September: monsoon
Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, and these months are when the rain arrives. The Umngot swells, turns green-brown with silt and runs fast. Boating is often suspended for safety. The Shillong–Dawki road has landslide-prone stretches, and delays are common. The hills are green and the waterfalls are full, but you will not get the clear-river experience. If you come, treat Dawki as a stop on a waterfall and village trip rather than the main event.
October: clearing
The rain eases and the river slowly settles. Early October can still be murky; by late October it is often clear again, before the winter crowds arrive.
Time of day
Boats and activities run only in daylight. Early morning is the quietest time on the water. From late morning the sun reaches the riverbed, which is when the water looks clearest in photos. See Dawki photo spots for where to stand.
Questions
Dawki — FAQ
Is October a good time to visit Dawki?
Late October often is. The river clears after the monsoon and the big winter crowds have not arrived. Early October can still be cloudy after rain.
Does boating stop in the monsoon?
Often, yes. From about June to September the river is high and fast, and boating is suspended or restricted when the water is unsafe. Check locally before you set off.
How busy is Dawki at weekends?
Very busy in the dry season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Expect queues for boats and slow traffic on the bridge. A weekday visit is much calmer.
Is Dawki hot?
Warmer than you might expect for Meghalaya. It sits low near the plains, so spring and summer days are hot and humid, while winter days are mild.
