What to Wear in Dawki
Dawki sits low on the edge of the plains, so it is warmer than Shillong for most of the year. Dress for sun and water in town, and bring a layer for the cold drive down from the hills.

The climate you are dressing for
Dawki is warm and humid for much of the year and mild in winter. The road from Shillong climbs over cold, misty hills first, so a winter morning can start cold and end in bright sun by the river. Wear a T-shirt with a fleece or light jacket on top, and take the layer off when you get down.
On the boats
The boats are small wooden rowing boats and you will get splashed. Quick-dry trousers or shorts and a light shirt work well. Water sandals with a strap are better than slippers, which slide off on wet planks and river stones. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch. There is no shade on the water, so bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen even in winter.
At Shnongpdeng
For kayaking, snorkelling or cliff-jumping, wear swimwear or a rash vest with shorts, and a T-shirt over it between activities. The camps are in a village, and people here are mostly church-going and fairly conservative. Cover up when you walk through the village, and keep beach wear for the riverbank.
Evenings and winter nights
A night in a riverside tent can be cool from December to February. Pack a warm top and socks. Mosquitoes come out at dusk near the water, so long sleeves and repellent help.
Rain
From June to September, and in storms in April and May, you need a proper rain jacket and shoes with grip. The road has landslide stretches, and the riverbanks are slippery.
Traditional dress
Khasi, Pnar and War women wear the jainsem, two lengths of cloth draped over the shoulders into a long, straight dress. It is often worn with a checked shawl called a tapmohkhlieh. You will see it at church on Sundays and at markets. Handwoven Khasi and Jaintia shawls make good warm layers and gifts. Shillong's markets have the best choice.
