Best time to visit Dehradun
October to March is the easy season in Dehradun, with October and November the clearest months. The monsoon is the one time to plan around, because this is one of the wettest cities in north India.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
Apr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →October and November
The rain has washed the air clean, the valley is green and the days are warm and sunny. The Mussoorie ridge stands out sharply behind the city. This is the best time for photos and for walking the Forest Research Institute campus. The stream at Robber's Cave is back to a safe level once the rains have ended, but ask locally in early October.
December to February
Days are mild and sunny, and nights are cold. Fog is common on December and January mornings and can delay trains and early flights. Pack warm layers. The water sights are cold to wade in, so go at midday.
March
Spring is warm and pleasant, and the city is busy with the Jhanda Mela at the Darbar Sahib, which begins five days after Holi. Mahashivratri, in February or March, fills Tapkeshwar with pilgrims.
April to June
It gets hot, often in the high 30s °C by May and sometimes higher. Hotels in Dehradun fill with people heading up to Mussoorie, and the hill road is jammed on weekends. If you visit now, see the sights early and late, and go up the hill in the afternoon. Robber's Cave is at its most popular, since cold water is exactly what people want.
July to September
The monsoon brings very heavy rain, often for hours at a time. Rivers and streams rise fast, and the stream-bed sights are sometimes closed. On the night of 15–16 September 2025 a cloudburst above Sahastradhara caused a flash flood that damaged the Sahastradhara market and flooded Tapkeshwar. Landslides also close roads towards Mussoorie and further into the hills. If you come in these months, keep a flexible plan and check weather alerts each day.
In short
Choose October–November for clear skies, December–February for cool sightseeing, and March for festivals. Avoid the stream sites in heavy rain. See the events and festivals page for dates.
Questions
Dehradun — FAQ
Does it snow in Dehradun?
No. Dehradun is too low for snow. The nearest regular snow is higher up, beyond Mussoorie, and even Mussoorie gets only occasional snowfall in winter.
Is Robber's Cave open in the monsoon?
It is often closed or restricted during and after heavy rain, when the stream rises. On clear days it may open. Ask locally before you go.
Is Dehradun a good summer escape from Delhi?
Not on its own, as May and June are hot. It works as a stop on the way to Mussoorie, which is much cooler.
When is fog a problem in Dehradun?
Mostly on December and January mornings, when it can delay trains and early flights. It usually clears by late morning.
