What to Wear in Dehradun
Dehradun is a valley city, so it is hotter than the hills in summer and colder than you expect on winter nights. Two of its sights also have you standing in a stream, which changes what you put on your feet.

Shoes that can get wet
At Robber's Cave you walk up a stream bed, and at Sahastradhara you will likely step into shallow water. Wear sports sandals with straps, or old trainers you do not mind soaking. Flip-flops slip off in the current and give little grip on wet stones. Roll-up or quick-dry trousers are easier than jeans, which stay heavy and wet for hours. Pack a small towel and a change of clothes for the drive back.
Summer: April to June
Days are hot, often in the high 30s °C by May, and the air turns sticky before the rains. Wear loose cotton or linen in light colours, a hat and sunglasses, and carry water. Mornings and evenings are the time for sightseeing. If the heat gets too much, Mussoorie is about 35 km up the hill and much cooler.
Monsoon: July to September
The rain in Dehradun is heavy and can go on for hours. Bring a proper rain jacket rather than a small umbrella, quick-dry clothes and shoes with a good grip. Leather shoes and suede do badly here.
Winter: October to March
October and March are warm by day. From December to February the days are mild and sunny, but mornings and nights are cold, and fog is common in December and January. Wear layers: a sweater or fleece and a light jacket you can take off at noon. If you are going on to Mussoorie, add a warmer coat, a hat and gloves.
Temples and the monastery
At Tapkeshwar and Mindrolling, cover your shoulders and knees, and wear shoes you can slip off easily. A shawl or stole is useful for covering up and for cool evenings. Locals often wear a kurta with a woollen shawl in winter.
Where to buy
Paltan Bazaar near the Clock Tower is the place for cheap sandals, rain jackets and shawls. Rajpur Road has branded stores and malls for sportswear.
