Local tips

Leave your phone at the hotel; phones are not allowed inside and locker queues add time.

Join the queue before dawn on ordinary days to finish before the late-morning rush.

Agree on any fee with a panda (temple priest) before accepting help with rituals.

Bathe or wash at the Shivganga tank first if you want to follow the pilgrims' custom.

Carry water and a small snack in a cloth bag for long waits in the queue.

Avoid Mondays in Shravan unless you are there for the pilgrimage itself.

Buy peda and prasad from busy shops in the temple lanes after darshan, not before.

The temple

Baba Baidyanath Dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest shrines of Shiva. It is also revered as a Shakti Peetha, where Sati's heart is believed to have fallen. Inside a walled compound in the centre of Deoghar stand 22 temples. The main shrine of Baidyanath faces the temple of Parvati, and the two spires are tied together with long red silk bands. The spires carry a panchshul, a five-pointed emblem, instead of a trident.

How darshan works

Pilgrims usually bathe in the Shivganga tank nearby, then join the queue with water and flowers. On quiet days, devotees can offer water directly. On crowded days, and throughout the Shravani Mela, the water is poured into an external arghya, a channel that carries it to the lingam. In September 2026 the temple management approved keeping this system all year, so check what applies on your visit. A paid quick-darshan pass has been offered at times; it may not run on peak days.

Rules

Mobile phones are not allowed inside the temple. Lockers are available around the compound, but leaving your phone at your hotel is simplest. Shoes and leather goods stay outside. Dress modestly. Expect the temple to close for a few hours in the afternoon.

The Shravani Mela

In Shravan (July–August), kanwariyas walk about 105 km from Sultanganj with Ganga water. Queues can stretch for kilometres and take many hours. If you are not a pilgrim, avoid Mondays in this month.

Around the temple

The lanes around the compound sell flowers, rudraksha, bangles and the famous peda. Pandas (family priests) will offer to guide you — agree on any fee before you start.
