Local tips
Visit after Baidyanath darshan for a quiet contrast to the main temple.
Stand back at the garden gate to fit the whole 146-foot tower in one frame.
Combine with Tapovan, which lies further along the same road.
Leave shoes at the stand by the gate and keep small change for it.
Go in the late afternoon when the garden is shaded and the stone glows.
Keep photos to the exterior and garden; avoid shooting inside the sanctum.
Look for the image of Balananda Brahmachari inside, the saint behind the temple.
The temple and its name
Naulakha Mandir is a tall stone temple to Radha and Krishna, a short drive from the Baidyanath compound. It rises about 146 feet, and its tiered tower recalls the Ramakrishna temple at Belur Math near Kolkata. It was completed in 1940, and the name comes from its cost: nine lakh rupees, a huge sum at the time.
Who built it
Rani Charushila, of a wealthy family from Pathuriaghata in Kolkata, lost her husband and her son and left home in grief. She met the saint Balananda Brahmachari, who advised her to build a temple. His image stands inside along with Radha, Krishna and Gopal.
Visiting
The temple stands in a garden, and the approach gives a clear view of the tower. Inside, the hall is cool and quiet. It is a peaceful change from the crowds at Baidyanath, and many pilgrims come here afterwards.
Remove shoes at the entrance and dress modestly. Photography inside the sanctum is not appropriate, but the garden and the exterior are fine.
When to go
Late afternoon, when light warms the stone and the garden is shaded, is the most pleasant time. Mornings are quiet too. The temple is usually busier on weekends and during festivals.
Nearby
Naulakha sits on the road towards Tapovan, so the two combine easily. Annapurna Restaurant nearby serves thalis and litti chokha.
