Good to know

Local tips

Go early in the morning before the bare rocks heat up.

Keep bags zipped and hands free, as the monkeys here snatch food and phones.

Wear trainers or grippy sandals; some sections between boulders are steep.

Carry water from the base, as nothing is sold on the hill itself.

Stop at Naulakha Mandir on the way, which is on the same road.

Remove shoes at the cave shrines and keep voices low where people are praying.

Avoid wet days in the monsoon when the rock turns slippery.

A hill of caves

Tapovan is a low, rocky hill about 10 km from Deoghar. Its boulders hide a series of small caves and rock shelters, and at the top is the Taponath Mahadev temple to Shiva, with a lingam set inside one of the caves. The hill is linked to the saint Balananda Brahmachari, who is said to have meditated here before founding his ashram in Deoghar. Local tradition also connects the caves with sages of legend.

The climb

A path and steps wind up between the rocks. It is not long, but some sections are steep, and you squeeze past boulders to reach certain caves. Allow about an hour to climb, look around and come down.

What you see

From the top the plain around Deoghar opens up, with fields and scattered villages. The caves themselves are small, often with a shrine or an image inside and lamp smoke on the walls. The Hanuman image near the approach is popular with visitors.

Monkeys

Tapovan is home to many monkeys. They are used to people and will grab food, bags and loose items. Carry nothing in your hands you would mind losing, and do not feed them.

When to go

Early morning, before the sun heats the rocks, is best. Winter is ideal. In summer, midday on bare stone is harsh. In the monsoon, rock can be slippery.

Getting there

Hire an auto or taxi from Deoghar. Naulakha Mandir is on the way, and many drivers combine the two. There are a few stalls at the base selling water and offerings.
