Good to know

Local tips

Do not count on the ropeway; it has been closed since the April 2022 accident.

Hire a local guide at the base if you want to climb beyond the first viewpoints.

Start before 9 am to finish the climb before the rocks heat up.

Carry water and keep it in a bag, as monkeys grab bottles as well as food.

Visit the Trikutachal Mahadev temple at the base even if you do not climb.

Eat at the restaurant on the approach road; there is almost nothing at the hill.

Avoid the trails in heavy monsoon rain, when the rock turns slippery.

Three peaks

Trikut Pahar, or Trikutachal, is a hill with three peaks about 16 km from Deoghar on the road to Dumka. The peaks are traditionally linked with Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. On the slopes are the Trikutachal Mahadev temple and a hermitage, and forest covers much of the hill. From the higher points you look out over farmland and wooded ridges.

The ropeway is closed

For years the main attraction was a ropeway that carried visitors up one of the peaks. On 10 April 2022 a cable car accident left three people dead and dozens trapped in the air until an air force rescue that took two days. The ropeway has been shut since. In August 2026 the state government said it plans to restart it only after full engineering and safety checks, with no date given. Do not plan a visit around the ropeway.

Visiting on foot

You can still visit the temple at the base and climb the steps and trails above it. The path up is long and rocky, with sections of steps. Going higher takes one and a half to two hours, and a local guide is sensible for anything beyond the first viewpoints. Carry water and start early.

Monkeys

The hill has a large monkey population. They snatch phones, glasses and food. Keep things in a zipped bag, and do not carry food in your hands.

When to go

October to March is best for walking. Summer afternoons are hot on the bare rock, and the monsoon makes paths slippery.

Getting there

Hire a taxi from Deoghar. Trikut View Restaurant on the approach road serves simple meals. There is little else at the base.
