What to Wear in Ellora

A day at Ellora means 2 km or more of walking on stone, in and out of hot sun and cool caves. Dress for comfort first, and cover shoulders and knees if you also plan to visit Grishneshwar.

Dress for a day on stone

Loose cotton is the answer for most of the year. The cave courtyards trap heat by late morning, and the walk between the Buddhist caves in the south and the Jain caves in the north is long and mostly open. A kurta with light trousers, or a cotton shirt and full-length trousers, keeps the sun off and works at the temple too. Bring a hat, sunglasses and a scarf you can pull over your head or shoulders.

Shoes matter more than clothes

The steps in the caves have been worn smooth by centuries of feet and can be slippery, especially in the monsoon. Wear trainers or sandals with a firm grip and a back strap. Leave smooth-soled mojaris and heels for the hotel. You can keep shoes on in most caves, but you will take them off at Grishneshwar, so pick a pair that slips off easily.

At Grishneshwar

Men remove their shirts and vests before entering the sanctum, as local tradition requires. Women are expected to wear a saree, salwar kameez or kurta. Shorts and short skirts are not welcome inside the temple. Leave belts and leather items with your phone in the lockers.

Through the year

From November to February, mornings at the gate can be chilly, so carry a light jacket or shawl you can take off by ten. From March to May, wear the lightest cotton you have and cover up against the sun. In the monsoon, quick-dry clothes and a small umbrella are more useful than a heavy raincoat.

Colours that work

Ellora's basalt is dark grey and brown. Rust, saffron, mustard, white and cream all stand out against it in photos. Very dark clothes disappear into the cave interiors.

Buying locally

The famous Paithani silk saree comes from Paithan, about 50 km south of Aurangabad. Shops in Aurangabad also sell Paithani and nine-yard nauvari sarees, and Himroo shawls woven in the city.

Questions

Ellora — FAQ

Do men have to remove their shirts at Grishneshwar?

Yes, to enter the sanctum. Men take off shirts and vests before going in. You can keep them on in the outer parts of the temple.

Can I wear shorts to the Ellora Caves?

The ASI does not turn people away for shorts, but full-length clothing is more comfortable in the sun and more respectful at the shrines. You will need longer clothes at Grishneshwar anyway.

What shoes are best for Ellora?

Trainers or sturdy sandals with grip. The cave steps are smooth and uneven, and you may walk several kilometres in a day.

Where can I buy a Paithani saree near Ellora?

In Aurangabad, about 30 km away, or at the weaving town of Paithan, about 50 km south of Aurangabad. Buy from a shop that can show the handloom mark if you want the real thing.
