Good to know

Local tips

Book an early Phase 2 slot, as wind and cloud usually build after midday.

Wear sunglasses; snow glare at this height can hurt your eyes quickly.

Stay inside the marked visitor area and do not walk off along the ridge.

Keep the visit short if anyone in your group has heart or breathing problems.

Carry water and a snack, as there is little to buy at the top.

Hire a registered guide for any off-piste skiing, and carry avalanche gear.

Go between December and May if snow is the main reason for your trip.

The mountain behind Gulmarg

Apharwat is the ridge that rises behind Gulmarg, reaching about 4,200 m at its summit. The second phase of the gondola takes visitors to a station on its shoulder, close to 4,000 m, which is as high as most people go. From there the view opens over snowy bowls, the Gulmarg meadow far below, and the Kashmir Valley beyond.

When there is snow

At this height, snow covers the slopes for much of the year. It is deepest from December to March, when Apharwat is the heart of Gulmarg's ski terrain, and patches usually last into May or June near the top station. In high summer the snow retreats to gullies and north-facing slopes, and the ridge turns rocky. If snow is the reason for your trip, go between December and May.

Skiing and the backcountry

The open bowls off Apharwat are known for deep powder, but they are also avalanche terrain, and skiers have died here in recent winters. Off-piste skiing should only be done with a registered local guide, avalanche gear and a check with the ski patrol on conditions.

Staying safe at the top

The ridge lies close to the Line of Control, and areas beyond the marked visitor zone are closed. Do not wander off along the ridge. Altitude affects many people here: move slowly, drink water, and go back down if you get a headache, dizziness or breathlessness. The temperature at the top can be far below the meadow's, and wind makes it feel colder.

Getting there

Access is only by the gondola, via Kongdoori. Phase 2 closes often for weather, so book a morning slot on the official site and have a backup plan.
