Local tips

Hire clubs and a caddie at the clubhouse if you have not brought your own.

Expect the ball to carry further in the thin mountain air.

Carry a light rain jacket, as weather changes quickly on the course.

Cross fairways only on marked paths and watch for players.

Visit early in the morning for still air and clear peaks.

Come in winter to see the course buried under snow and used for sledging.

Golf at 2,650 m

The Gulmarg Golf Course spreads across the floor of the meadow at about 2,650 m, which makes it one of the highest green golf courses in the world. It is an 18-hole course with fairways running between pine trees, streams and the huts of the meadow, with the Pir Panjal peaks all around. Golf has been played in Gulmarg since the British era, and the course is now run by the local tourism authorities.

When it is open

The course is under snow for much of the year and opens for play in the summer season, roughly May to October, depending on how long the snow lasts. In winter the same ground becomes part of the snowfield used for sledging and beginner skiing.

Playing as a visitor

Visitors can usually book a round at the clubhouse, with green fees and club hire available. Caddies can be arranged. Thin air makes the ball carry further than at sea level, and the weather can turn quickly, so carry a light rain jacket. Book ahead in peak summer.

For non-golfers

Even if you do not play, the fairways make the best open foreground in Gulmarg for photographs of the mountains. Keep to the paths that cross the course when games are being played, and watch for golfers before crossing a fairway.

Nearby

The clubhouse is close to the market road, and St Mary's Church and the Maharani temple are both within walking distance.
