Local tips
Book on the official cable car corporation website only and ignore ticket resellers in the car park.
Carry the same photo ID you used to book, as tickets are checked at the gate.
Take the earliest slot you can get, before wind picks up and clouds cover the peaks.
Wear a warm jacket, hat and gloves for Phase 2 even in July.
Have a backup plan for Kongdoori if Phase 2 closes for wind or snow.
Check the official site for maintenance closure days before driving up.
Walk slowly at the top and go down if you feel breathless or dizzy.
One of the world's highest cable cars
The Gulmarg Gondola is run by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation. It climbs in two stages from the edge of the meadow at about 2,650 m. Phase 1 rises through a steep pine forest to Kongdoori, at about 3,080 m, a bowl used for beginner skiing and snow play. Phase 2 continues over open slopes to a station on the shoulder of Apharwat Peak, close to 4,000 m, where snow often lasts into early summer.
Booking tickets
Buy tickets only through the corporation's official online booking site. Daily numbers are limited, and peak dates in summer and winter sell out well in advance. Phase 2 is booked together with or after Phase 1 and runs in set time slots. Do not buy from resellers in the car park; tickets are checked against your ID. Carry the same ID you booked with.
Phase 2 and the weather
Phase 2 stops often for strong wind, fresh snow or avalanche control, sometimes with little notice. If it is closed, Phase 1 to Kongdoori is still worth the ride. Mornings are usually clearer and calmer, and queues grow through the day. The gondola also closes on some days for maintenance, so check the official site before you go.
At the top
The Phase 2 station is cold even in summer, and the air is thin. Walk slowly, drink water, and head down if you feel dizzy, breathless or develop a bad headache. Stay inside the marked areas: the ridge is close to the Line of Control and the terrain beyond is avalanche country.
For skiers
In winter, the gondola is the main lift for Gulmarg's ski terrain, and there are separate arrangements for skiers. Check the rules on ski passes at the ticket office or on the official site.
