The meadow that named the town
Gulmarg means meadow of flowers, and the meadow is the wide bowl at the centre of town, ringed by pine forest and the Pir Panjal peaks. Everything in Gulmarg is arranged around it: hotels on its edges, the golf course across its floor, the gondola base at one end, and the Maharani temple and St Mary's Church on small rises within it.
Summer and winter
From late May the snow clears and the grass turns green. Wildflowers are usually at their best in June and July, and shepherd families bring flocks through on their way to higher pastures. In winter the same bowl lies under deep snow and fills with sledges, snowmen and beginner skiers. The contrast is so strong that many visitors come twice.
Ponies and sledges
Pony owners offer rides around the meadow and up to viewpoints such as Khilanmarg and the frozen lake areas above. In winter, sledge pullers offer rides down the gentle slopes. Rates are fixed by the local authorities and should be displayed; agree the route, time and price before you start, and pay at the end.
Walks from the meadow
A forest trail climbs from the meadow to Khilanmarg, a smaller meadow a few kilometres above town, with views of Nanga Parbat on clear days. The outer circular road around Gulmarg makes an easy walk with views across the bowl. Paths are muddy after rain and icy in winter.
Good to know
Much of the meadow is part of the golf course in summer; keep to paths when play is on. Litter is a real problem in peak season, so carry yours back.
