A Victorian church in the meadow

St Mary's Church was built in 1902, when Gulmarg was a summer retreat for British officials and families escaping the heat of the plains. It is a small church of grey stone with a steep green roof and a short spire, standing on a slope in the Gulmarg meadow. Inside, the walls are panelled in wood, and there are stained glass windows.

Its story

After the British left in 1947, the church saw little use and was closed for many years. It was later restored, and occasional services have been held since. Today it has no regular congregation, but it is kept by caretakers and is one of the oldest churches in Jammu and Kashmir.

Visiting

The church is usually open during the day, and visitors may go inside to look or sit quietly. Keep voices low, do not climb on the pews, and ask before photographing inside. There is no entry fee. The church is a short walk from the market road and the gondola base, and pairs naturally with the Maharani temple on the other side of the meadow.

In the snow

In winter, snow piles high around the church and on its roof, and the path can be icy. Wear shoes with good grip. The church is at its most photographed after a fresh snowfall, when the green roof stands out against the white.

Nearby

The old hotels around the meadow, including Nedou's and Highlands Park, date from the same era and give a sense of Gulmarg's resort past.
