Where the Sati story begins
Daksheswara Mahadev is a Shiva temple in Kankhal, about 4 km south of Har Ki Pauri. It marks the spot where King Daksha held his great sacrifice, or yagna. He left out his son-in-law Shiva, and his daughter Sati, Shiva's wife, was so shamed that she gave up her life in the sacrificial fire. Shiva's grief over her body led to the Shakti Peethas across South Asia, so this small town sits at the start of one of Hinduism's best-known stories.
The temple
The present temple was built in 1810 by Queen Dhankaur and rebuilt in 1962. It is in the northern Nagara style, with a white spire over the sanctum. In the courtyard, a small pit marks the place of the yagna. The complex also includes a Das Mahavidya temple to the ten forms of the goddess and a Ganga temple. Behind it, Daksha Ghat leads down to the river.
Kankhal
Kankhal is older and quieter than central Haridwar. Its lanes are full of ashrams and old havelis, and many pilgrim families come here for ancestral rites. Sati Kund, linked to the same story, is nearby. It is a good place to spend a slow afternoon after the hill temples.
When to go
For most of the year the temple is calm, and you can take your time. It is very different in Shravan (July–August), when Kanwar pilgrims and local devotees fill it, especially on Mondays. Mahashivratri draws long queues too. Navratri is also celebrated here.
Getting there
An auto or e-rickshaw from Har Ki Pauri takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Roads into Kankhal are narrow and slow in traffic. During the Kanwar Yatra, many roads around Haridwar are diverted, so allow extra time or walk the last stretch. The temple usually opens early in the morning and closes in the evening; check timings locally.
