Good to know

Local tips

Take the boat to the Buddha statue about an hour before sunset so you return as the lights come on.

Walk Tank Bund in the evening rather than at midday, when there is almost no shade.

Check whether Lumbini Park is open before you go, as it has been reported shut on some Mondays.

Do not touch or swim in the lake, because the water is polluted.

Head up to Birla Mandir for a high view over the water, leaving your phone at the gate.

Avoid driving near Tank Bund on Ganesh immersion days, when roads close for hours.

Combine the lake with dinner at Paradise in Secunderabad, a short drive north.

A lake from the Qutb Shahi years

Hussain Sagar was dug in 1563, in the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, and named after Hussain Shah Wali, who oversaw the work. It was built to supply water to the city. Today it separates Hyderabad from Secunderabad, and the roads around it are where the city comes to walk in the evening.

The Buddha statue

A single-stone statue of the Buddha, about 18 m tall, stands on a platform called Gibraltar Rock in the middle of the lake. It was installed in 1992. Boats run out to it from Lumbini Park and from the Eat Street side. The trip takes about 15 minutes each way, and you get some time on the platform. Boat hours usually run from morning until evening, and they stop in rough weather. Lumbini Park has been reported shut on some Mondays, so check before you go.

Around the shore

  • Tank Bund runs along the east side and is lined with statues of Telugu poets and leaders. It is the classic sunset walk.
  • Necklace Road curves along the west side past Sanjeevaiah Park and NTR Gardens.
  • Birla Mandir on the hill above gives a high view over the lake.

The water is polluted, so this is a place to look at and boat on, not to swim in or touch.

Festival days

In August or September, Ganesh Chaturthi ends with thousands of idols immersed here. Tank Bund becomes a solid crowd and closes to traffic. At Bathukamma, flower stacks are floated on the lake. It is worth seeing, but plan on walking, not driving.
