About Shree Govindajee Temple
The Shree Govindajee Temple stands next to the old royal palace in Imphal and is the most important Vaishnav temple in Manipur. It is dedicated to Govindajee, a form of Krishna, and Radha. The white temple is topped with two gold domes, and a large open hall in front of it is used for prayers, music and dance.
The temple is the home of the Manipuri Raas, the graceful dance that tells the story of Krishna and Radha. On full-moon nights such as Kartik Purnima and Basanta Purnima, dancers in the stiff, embroidered potloi skirt perform in the hall. Daily worship follows strict rituals, and the evening prayers, with drums and singing, are the best time to feel the temple at its liveliest.
