About Kangla Fort
Kangla Fort, on the western bank of the Imphal River, was the seat of the Meitei kings for centuries and is one of the most important places in Manipuri history. Inside its walls and moats are wide lawns, ponds, old gateways, ceremonial buildings and shrines. The best-known sight is the pair of large white Kangla-Sha, mythical lion-dragon guardians, standing in front of the ruins of the old coronation hall.
After the British took Manipur in 1891, Kangla became a military base, and later the headquarters of the Assam Rifles. It was handed back to the state in 2004 and opened to the public. Today it is a quiet green space in the middle of the city, with the Pakhangba temple, museum buildings and plenty of room to walk.
