About Loktak Lake
Loktak Lake, about 48 km south of Imphal, is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. It is famous for its phumdis, floating islands of grass, roots and soil. Fishermen shape some of them into neat circles, called athaphums, to trap fish, and from above the lake looks like it is covered in green rings.
The best view is from Sendra, a small island hill on the southern side of the lake. From there, boats take visitors out among the phumdis and the huts where some fishing families live. The lake is also the heart of Keibul Lamjao National Park, and the town of Moirang nearby has the INA Memorial, where the Indian National Army raised its flag in 1944.
