About Lal Bagh Palace

Lal Bagh Palace was built by the Holkar rulers of Indore between 1886 and 1921, and the royal family lived here until 1978. It is the most European of Indore's palaces, with Italian marble, crystal chandeliers, Belgian stained glass, painted ceilings and a ballroom with a sprung wooden floor. Its cast-iron main gates, shipped from England, are a copy of the gates of Buckingham Palace in London.

Today the palace is a museum, about 3 km south of Rajwada. A large restoration of the palace and its grounds began in 2025, and conservation of the Durbar Hall was completed in early 2026. Some rooms or parts of the garden may be closed while the work continues, so check before you go.
