About the Balancing Rock

The Balancing Rock is one of Jabalpur's odd natural sights: a large boulder resting on another rock and touching it at only a small point. It sits on the rocky hills near the foot of Madan Mahal Fort, in the Deotal area, where erosion has left many rounded boulders piled on top of each other.

The rock is famous for staying in place through the earthquake that struck Jabalpur in May 1997 and damaged many buildings in the district. It is a quick stop, usually 15 to 30 minutes, and easy to combine with a climb to Madan Mahal Fort.
