About the Chausath Yogini Temple
The Chausath Yogini Temple stands on a hill above the Narmada at Bhedaghat, about 25 km west of Jabalpur. The Kalachuri kings built it around the turn of the 11th century, and it is the largest of India's round yogini temples, about 38 m (125 ft) across. Its open courtyard is lined with 81 small shrines, each holding a stone figure of a yogini, one of the goddesses of the Tantric tradition. Chausath means 64 in Hindi, the usual number of yoginis, although this temple has more shrines.
Many of the figures have lost their faces or parts of their bodies, but the carving that survives is still fine. In the middle of the courtyard is a shrine added in the 12th century to Gauri-Shankar, with a rare image of Shiva and Parvati riding together on the bull Nandi, and worship still takes place there. The temple is reached by about 150 steps, and from the top you look out over the river and Bhedaghat.
