About Madan Mahal Fort

Madan Mahal Fort is a small Gond fort built on top of a huge boulder on a rocky hill in Jabalpur. It is named after the Gond king Madan Shah, who is traditionally said to have built it, although sources give different dates. The fort is closely linked with Rani Durgavati, the 16th-century Gond queen of Garha, who died fighting a Mughal army in 1564 and gives her name to the city's university and museum.

It was more a watch post than a palace, and it is small. You can still see a few rooms, the remains of a stable and a small water tank, and local stories speak of a secret tunnel. The main reward is the view: from the top, Jabalpur spreads out below in every direction. The Balancing Rock is close by, so most visitors see both together.
