About the Marble Rocks
At Bhedaghat (also spelt Bheraghat), about 25 km west of Jabalpur, the Narmada flows through a narrow gorge between cliffs of white marble that rise about 30 m (100 ft) from the water. The colour of the marble changes with the light through the day, and the gorge has appeared in many Hindi films.
The way to see it is by boat. Boats leave from Panchvati Ghat, reached by steps down from the road, and usually take you through the gorge to Bandar Kudni, the "monkey's leap", where the cliffs come so close that a monkey could jump across. The boatmen keep up a lively running commentary of local stories, which is part of the fun. Boat rides stop for the monsoon, usually from mid-June to mid-October, and night rides run only on dates the district administration allows.
