What's on in Kalimpong

Kalimpong's calendar follows its mixed communities: Nepali Hindu festivals in autumn, Tibetan Buddhist ones in late winter and a real Christmas at the old mission churches. Dates move with lunar calendars, so confirm them each year.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Kalimpong right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Kalimpong

Kalimpong's calendar runs through most of the year, with the busiest weeks in the clear, comfortable months and a quieter stretch in the heaviest rain. Broadly, Oct – Mar and Apr – Jun is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Across West Bengal

Durga Puja

🗓️ September–October

Kolkata becomes an open-air art exhibition of themed pandals, best walked after dark.

Planning: Queues at the famous pandals run past three hours on the last evenings, and mobile networks fail in the crowds — agree a meeting point.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Dashain (September–October)

Dashain is the biggest festival in the hills, the Nepali form of Durga Puja and Dussehra. The main day is Tika, when elders put red tika and barley shoots on the foreheads of younger relatives. Families travel home, and many small shops close for a few days around Tika. Book rooms and transport early.

Tihar (October–November)

Tihar is the Nepali festival of lights, held at the same time as Diwali. Houses are lit with lamps, crows, dogs and cows are honoured on separate days, and groups of young people go door to door singing Deusi and Bhailo songs. Kitchens make sael roti in large batches.

Losar (February–March)

Losar, the Tibetan New Year, is marked at Durpin, Tharpa Choling and the town's other monasteries with prayers, offerings and family visits. Visitors can watch from the edges of the courtyards. Ask before photographing any ritual.

Christmas

Kalimpong has a large Christian community and old mission schools. MacFarlane Memorial Church and St Teresa's hold services, and the schools and streets are decorated through December.

Independence Day

The Independence Shield football tournament has been played in Kalimpong every year since 1947 as part of the town's Independence Day celebrations. Football is the local passion, and the matches draw big crowds.

Martyrs' Day (27 July)

27 July is observed across the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills as Martyrs' Day, marking the police firing at a Gorkhaland rally in Kalimpong in 1986. Expect memorial gatherings in town.

Every week

The Haat Bazaar below the bus stand runs every Wednesday and Saturday. It is the easiest way to see local life, with vegetables, churpi, clothes and momo stalls.
