Local tips
Book rooms well ahead in October, November and the spring holidays, as the house has few rooms.
Ask at reception before walking round the gardens if you are not a guest.
Visit Durpin Monastery on the same trip, as both are on Durpin Hill.
Bring a warm layer for the evening, as old stone houses stay cold.
Come in late afternoon for warm light on the stone front.
Do not photograph the army area you pass on the road up the hill.
Keep your voice down on the lawns, as guests use them to relax.
A jute baron's mansion
Morgan House was built in the 1930s by George Morgan, a jute baron, on an estate of about 16 acres on Durpin Hill. It is a British country house moved to the Himalayas: grey stone walls, gabled roofs, tall chimneys and small-paned windows, set among lawns and old trees. The story goes that it was built to mark a marriage and used as a summer retreat for parties.
A government lodge
After independence the house passed to the government, and it is now run by the West Bengal tourism department as a heritage tourist lodge. You can book a room through the state tourism booking system. The interiors keep their wooden floors, fireplaces and old furniture.
The ghost stories
Morgan House is famous in the hills for being haunted. Local stories say the ghost of Lady Morgan walks the corridors at night. Treat it as part of the house's charm rather than a reason to stay away. Staff are used to the questions.
Visiting without staying
The main reason to come is the building and the view over the valleys. Non-guests can often look round the gardens and the outside of the house, but this is a working hotel, so ask at reception and respect guests' privacy.
Getting there
Morgan House is on Durpin Hill, a short drive from Durpin Monastery. The hill is an army area, so do not photograph camps or vehicles on the way up. A taxi from the town centre takes a few minutes.
