Local tips
Book rafting only with a registered operator and wear the life jacket and helmet they give you.
Check on the day whether rafting is running, as it depends on water levels and official clearance.
Do not swim in the Teesta; the current is fast and the water is very cold.
Stay well back from the riverbank after heavy rain, when the level can rise quickly.
Stop only at wide lay-bys for photos, as the road down is narrow and busy with jeeps.
Carry snacks and water, as NH10 traffic can hold you up for a long time.
Do not photograph army posts or checkpoints along the river road.
The river below town
The Teesta flows in a deep valley between the Kalimpong and Darjeeling hills, and it separates Kalimpong from Sikkim further up. Teesta Bazaar, about 16 km downhill from Kalimpong, is where NH10 crosses the river and where the roads to Darjeeling and Kalimpong split. Most visitors see the river on their way in and out of town.
Rafting
Rafting on the Teesta started here in 1991. Trips usually run on stretches of about 3 km for families up to 12 km for stronger rafters, over rapids of up to about grade III. Rafting was suspended after the October 2023 flood reshaped the riverbed, and operators have since restarted trips on some stretches. Which stretch runs depends on the water level and official clearance, so book with a registered operator and check that day. Rafting stops in the monsoon.
Triveni
Near Teesta Bazaar the Rangeet, clear and green, meets the Teesta at a point called Triveni. Riverside camps have grown up there for tents and bonfires.
The 2023 flood and the monsoon
In October 2023 a glacial lake burst in North Sikkim and sent a flood down the Teesta that badly hit Teesta Bazaar. The river can still rise fast after heavy rain upstream. Stay back from the water's edge during the monsoon, and never swim: the current is strong and cold.
Views from the road
The best photos are from lay-bys on the road between Kalimpong and Teesta Bazaar, looking along the gorge. The water looks green in the dry months and grey-brown with silt in the rains. The area has army posts, so do not photograph military sites or checkpoints.
