Best time to visit Kanchipuram
The best time to visit Kanchipuram is from December to February, when days are warm rather than hot, the rain has mostly passed and walking barefoot around the temples is comfortable. Early mornings in January can even feel a little cool.
The rest of the year takes more planning. April to June is very hot, with May the hottest month, and October to December brings most of the year's rain with the northeast monsoon, sometimes with cyclones from the Bay of Bengal. You can visit Kanchipuram at any time of year, but the season changes how much of the day you can comfortably spend outside.

December to February
The most pleasant months, with clearer skies, lower humidity and very little rain in January and February. December can still bring late showers. This is also the busiest season for visitors, and Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival, falls in mid-January.
March
Days start to heat up, but mornings are still comfortable. Panguni Uthiram, the biggest festival at Ekambareswarar, usually falls in March or April.
April to June
The hottest time of year, with May often close to 40°C. Visit the temples at opening time and again after they reopen in the late afternoon, and rest in the middle of the day. The Garuda Sevai procession at Varadaraja Perumal Temple usually falls in May or June.
July to September
Still hot and humid, with occasional thunderstorms, mostly in the evenings. Navaratri at Kamakshi Amman Temple usually falls in September or October.
October and November
The northeast monsoon brings most of the year's rain, and November is often the wettest month. Heavy downpours can flood streets and delay travel, and cyclones are possible, so check the forecast before you go.
When Is Kanchipuram Most Crowded?
Kanchipuram is busiest on weekends, public holidays and temple festival days, when pilgrims arrive from Chennai and across South India. Fridays are crowded at Kamakshi Amman Temple, and the big festivals, such as Panguni Uthiram and the Garuda Sevai, bring very large crowds and road closures.
For a quieter visit, go on a weekday, reach the first temple as it opens, and avoid the festival weeks unless you want to see them.
