About Ekambareswarar Temple

Ekambareswarar is the largest temple in Kanchipuram and one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the five great Shiva temples linked to the elements. Here Shiva is worshipped as earth, in the form of a lingam that legend says the goddess Parvati made from sand under a mango tree. The temple's name comes from that tree, and a sacred mango tree, said to be thousands of years old, still stands beside the main shrine.

The temple covers a huge area in the Shiva Kanchi part of town. Its southern gopuram, about 59 m high, is one of the tallest in South India and can be seen from far across Kanchipuram. Inside are long pillared corridors, a great hall of pillars and several courtyards, so give yourself time to walk around slowly.
