About Kamakshi Amman Temple

Kamakshi Amman Temple is the great goddess temple of Kanchipuram and one of the Shakti Peethas, the most sacred shrines of the goddess in India. Kamakshi, a form of Parvati, is worshipped here in a seated, meditative pose, and the tower above her sanctum is covered in gold plates. By tradition, none of Kanchipuram's Shiva temples has a separate shrine for the goddess, because Kamakshi is seen as the goddess of the whole town.

The temple sits in the old town, close to Ekambareswarar and Kumara Kottam, and has its own temple tank inside the walls. It is closely linked to the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who has a shrine in the complex, and it is at its busiest on Fridays and during Navaratri.
